- 1Melt lard or butter in a heavy skillet over medium heat
- 2Sauté onion for 4 minutes until soft; add garlic and cumin, cook 1 more minute
- 3Add beans and their liquid plus broth
- 4Mash beans with a potato masher or fork as they cook, about 8 minutes
